What is Coronavirus ?

Coronavirus belongs to coronavirus of coronaviridae of Nidovirales in systematic classification. Coronaviruses are RNA viruses with envelope and linear single strand positive strand genome. They are a large class of viruses widely existing in nature.

Coronavirus has a diameter of about 80 ~ 120 nm, a methylated cap structure at the 5 ‘end of the genome and a poly (a) tail at the 3′ end. The total length of the genome is about 27-32 KB. It is the largest virus in the known RNA viruses.

Coronavirus only infects vertebrates, such as humans, rats, pigs, cats, dogs, wolves, chickens, cattle and poultry.

Coronavirus was first isolated from chickens in 1937. The diameter of virus particles is 60 ~ 200 nm, with an average diameter of 100 nm. It is spherical or oval and has pleomorphism. The virus has a envelope, and there are spinous processes on the envelope. The whole virus is like the corona. The spinous processes of different coronaviruses are obviously different. Tubular inclusion bodies can sometimes be seen in coronavirus infected cells.

2019 novel coronavirus (2019 ncov , causing novel coronavirus pneumonia covid-19 ) is the seventh known coronavirus that can infect people. The other six are hcov-229e, hcov-oc43, HCoV-NL63, hcov-hku1, SARS CoV (causing severe acute respiratory syndrome) and mers cov (causing Middle East respiratory syndrome).
